"The Manipulative Bastard"
Healer

Gregor Haus is in his late thirties. Shockingly enough, he bears a remarkable resemblance to Hugh Laurie. Yes, stand and be amazed. His eyes are a piercing blue that adds a sort of mysterious charm to his face, and gives his penetrating stares an oddly mesmerizing edge to them. His hair is the sort of silver brown of a man in his late thirties whose hair is gradually changing to grey. He walks with the assistance of a cane, and often wears casual shirts with tailored suit jackets over them, contributing to a general sense of oddness about him. He refuses to wear proper medical attire, because that would make him “look like a doctor.”
Dr. Gregor Haus, sometimes called Gregory by the uninformed, was born Gregor Wilmot Haus on April 11, 1938, in a nicely furnished red brick manor in Gloucestershire to John and Blythe Haus. While Blythe was a muggleborn, John, Haus’ father, was one of the only remaining descendants of the English line of a German pureblood family. He was also one of the better curse breakers for Gringotts bank, who spent much of his life in Egypt. While John was away, Gregor and Blythe quickly learned to make due. Gregor spent most of his early childhood in books, reading everything that he could get his hands on, though much of it was the sort of thing that bored normal children straight to tears. The sort of books one finds in an old English manor, Gregor discovered, were on such fascinating subjects as Neoplatonism, Keynesian Economics, Freudian Psychology and the Cardiovascular System. All this reading led to a fairly advanced understanding of an assortment of different subjects and a particular interest in medical science, but to a sort of social ineptitude that he never bothered to correct.
When he went to Hogwarts at the tender age of eleven, he was sorted into Slytherin with little difficulty, though the hat did pause at Ravenclaw for a moment or two. He was known to his teachers as an exceptionally bright student who couldn’t seem to stay out of his trouble because of his nerve. He had an aptitude for Charms and Potions, and he was good at Care of Magical Creatures, though he didn’t much care for the dirty work, so to speak. He was also good at Defense Against the Dark Arts, but his jokes that “one of you might even get to use this stuff against me one day” garnered the professor’s concern. His frequent and often caustic sarcasm amused some and angered others, and his jokes frequently involved sensitive subjects. He seemed to genuinely enjoy making people uncomfortable at times, and would often touch on topics that merited an awkward silence.
Immediately after graduation, conflicts in the magical world drove Haus to give muggle life a go, finding work as a diagnostician in a Catholic muggle hospital called St. Lazarus(though he may or may not have had to forge a few documents here and there to do so). Due to his studies outside the classroom of various kinds of muggle medicine, he had no more trouble with the job with any other doctor at that hospital. His unusual insights and creative solutions made him one of the more respected new recruits. However, after unplugging the respirator of an uncooperative patient (and explaining himself with only, “Well, he didn’t die, did he?”), Haus was relieved of his duties.
Despite his propensity for brutal honesty and questionable ethics, Haus was hired by St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries shortly after his brief stint at the muggle hospital. His unmatched skill as a healer and diagnostician were enough, for most, to outweigh his unusual bedside manner, and he was quickly promoted through the ranks, becoming one of Mungo’s best and most distinguished senior healers. The magnitude of his promotion in the first two years that he worked at the hospital was matched only by the number of complaints filed against him during that time – greater than the number of complaints received by the remainder of the staff combined.
Though Haus was not specifically assigned to it, he enjoyed strolls through the Closed ward with the long stay patients undergoing psychiatric treatments, because he said that crazy people were never boring. Also, due to his need to solve every possible puzzle, dubbed the “Rubik’s Complex” by another Mungo’s employee, he was interested in finding answers to problems that had no apparent solutions.
Due partly to his eccentricities, this misanthropist was too much for many people, but not for Dr. James Voigt, fellow St. Mungo’s healer who did a lot of work in Pediatrics at St. Mungo’s. They had lunch together one day for no particular reason, and somehow, they two hit it off. They have since become best friends, though Voigt is not immune to Haus’ sarcastic comments. For whatever reason, Haus has taken to calling Dr. Voigt, “Jimmy,” and if asked, would avoid providing a real answer to the question, instead saying something to the effect of, “It’s a secret ‘friendship club’ name.”
During his career at St. Mungos, Albus Dumbledore, the esteemed headmaster of Hogwarts school, once came in with an unusual (and then uncommon) disease consisting of a high fever and persistent, unsightly blotches that seemed to be spreading rapidly. What had baffled other healers was quickly diagnosed and treated by Haus and Voigt, clearing up the problem in a matter of days.
During the early winter of 1976, problems began to arise in St. Mungo’s when a prominent pureblood family, the Yaxley’s, donated a large sum of money to the hospital, earning a position on the board. The eldest male of the Yaxley family clashed immediately with Dr. Haus, feeling that he cost St. Mungo’s entirely too much money, often refused to follow orders, and was damaging the hospital’s reputation for friendly and affordable wizarding health care. This, of course, was mostly true. As the clash came to a head, with Yaxley calling for the removal of Dr. Haus, the Hogwarts Nurse was sent away on some sort of official business for the headmaster, and Albus Dumbledore offered the vacant job to Haus and Voigt. Haus and Voigt accepted the job offer and came to Hogwarts at the closing of the 1976-77 year.
Haus is an often-asocial misanthrope who has never had much in the way of bedside manner, but who has never seemed to care. His intelligence as well as his healer status meant that, in his adulthood, he had a number of girlfriends, but was generally not all that interested in a long-term commitment. He is intelligent, sarcastic and witty, but he’s also cynical. His mantra, of sorts, is that “Everybody Lies,” and it seems to consistently prove itself to be true in his cases. He is widely respected by his colleagues, though those whose egos are easily bruised tend to dislike him at first. Essentially, Haus would rather have your respect than your friendship, generally, though his relationship with Voigt is different in this regard.
He plays the piano very well, a skill picked up during long, lonely hours in the Gloucestershire manor, and he sometimes enjoys watching muggle soap operas, though he claims that he only watches them on mute. He also enjoys electronic gaming devices, and was an early pong addict.
When asked serious questions, he’s often evasive, evidenced by many exchanges with his colleagues, patients and higher-ups. He will readily admit that he is addicted to painkillers; he just won’t admit that it’s a problem. His addiction is due largely to an accident in his early thirties (in which he was attacked at close range by a poorly restrained manticore), which rendered him immobile below the knee in his left leg. However, much of the pain he experiences seems to be psychosomatic.

According to director/executive producer david shore, House's actual birthday is June 11, 1959. I do not own House, however, and I also do not own Harry Potter. Just the way I screw with it. That's all me.
